Distinguished and Famous people from Mount Hotham

⛏️ Bill Spargo

Bill Spargo helped make Mount Hotham a place for skiers as well as road crews and prospectors. Appointed to supervise the Alpine Road between Harrietville and Omeo in 1923, he lived in a stone cottage that developed into the Hotham Heights Chalet as it accommodated visiting skiers. He also went looking for gold, discovering the Red Robin reef in 1941. Spargo’s Hut preserves another part of that prospecting story. His career moved between maintaining access to the mountains, enjoying their snow and searching beneath their surface. The Spargo name on Hotham’s landscape recalls someone who worked there in several quite different capacities.

🎿 Greta Small

Greta Small grew up at Porepunkah and began her skiing at Hotham. She progressed from local snow to international alpine racing, carrying the Australian flag at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck in 2012. At eighteen, she made her senior Olympic debut at Sochi in 2014, competing across the women’s alpine program. Injuries interrupted the next stage of her career, but she returned for the 2018 PyeongChang Games. Her Hotham association is the starting point of that sporting development, while Porepunkah remains her childhood hometown.

🎿 Lindsay Salmon

Lindsay Salmon brought wartime skiing experience back to Hotham. During the Second World War he was among a small group of Australian soldiers recruited to train troops in ski combat in the mountains of Lebanon. Back in Victoria, he registered the Mount Hotham Ski School in 1946 and began building the Drift Chalet, which opened in 1952. His role in developing the resort earned several nicknames, including Mr Hotham. Lindsay’s and Lindsay’s Cliff preserve his name on the mountain.
